The Cat And Bird 7" is a very limited edition split between The Enright House (that's us! yay!) and the late Break Mission Kills. This collaboration, however, is more of a marriage than a split, with each of our band’s derelict post-pop aesthetic supporting the other's. The entire run is limited to 100 copies, though the record (and bonus tracks) can be downloaded for free right here at www.catandbird.info! We were thrilled to work with Peter King, who has been cutting his distinctive transparent records for over 20 years in his rural Ashburton workshop. King has worked with hundreds of bands, from local unknowns to international acts such as The Beastie Boys, Pavement, and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth. Building each lathe-cutting device out of rough-and-tumble electronics and washing machine parts, King’s polycarbonate discs are almost artisanal, individualized works of lo-fi art. |

Due to the nature of the discs and their cutting process, the sound quality is rather low in fidelity, which is why every 7" also comes with easy to follow instructions for downloading the two 7" tracks, as well as two additional bonus tracks, as either wav or mp3 files. The 7" mp3s, as well as the bonus tracks, are free for everyone to download. The uncompressed wav files, however, are reserved for the 100 people who purchase the lathe cut. Fair enough? If you're curious how Peter, who has cut records for bands such as Pavement and The Beastie Boys, makes his DIY lathe cuts, you can check out a making-of documentary in three parts on youtube [part 1, part 2, part 3] or visit his website, The Lathe Cut Universe.

Want to help us fund more cool limited edition projects in the future? We're barely covering costs with the sale of the physical lathe cuts, so even a dollar or two can add up to a little something, which we can then use to make even more special things for you. The Enright House is probably something of chimera in terms of sound: instead of being one third lion, one third she-goat, and one third serpent, however, they are probably more one part indie-pop, one rather large part post-rock and one rather not-so-large part electronica. The press have described their sound as anything from "pop as pop should be" to "skittery percussion, ethereal drones with metallic resonances, and disturbingly atmospheric sounds...". Think Death Cab For Cutie meets Mogwai. Sigur Ros meets Pinback. Philip Glass meets a distortion pedal. Poetry meets numbers. Up meets down. Light meets the drain-pipe. Break Mission Kills built dreamy melodic walls and dimensions out of beauty and grime, splashing as if twins. They made this happen with guitars, bass, synths, samples and vocals. The intent was to create original music that allowed a series of strong, and seemingly contrasting elements when separate, to collide and meld seamlessly into one liquid-audio dreamworld. Break Mission Kills was a fusion of opposing forces helping to create something tottering between balance and chaos; somehow peaceful in it's honesty. Break Mission Kills is, unfortunately, no more. Sarah is now Misfit Mod.
